India to Host 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting and 26th CEP

The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, in collaboration with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), will proudly host the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 46) and the 26th Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP 26) from May 20 to 30, 2024, in the picturesque city of Kochi, Kerala.

Environmental Stewardship and Scientific Collaboration

India's commitment to facilitating constructive global dialogue on environmental stewardship and scientific collaboration in Antarctica is underscored by hosting these significant events. The ATCM and CEP meetings play a pivotal role in safeguarding Antarctica's fragile ecosystem and promoting scientific research in the region.

Antarctic Treaty System and India's Role

The Antarctic Treaty, signed in 1959 and in force since 1961, designates Antarctica as a region dedicated to peaceful purposes, scientific cooperation, and environmental protection. Currently, 56 countries are party to this treaty. India, a Consultative Party since 1983, actively participates in decision-making alongside other Consultative Parties.

India's Antarctic Research Stations

India operates two year-round research stations in Antarctica: Dakshin Gangotri (established in 1983), Maitri (established in 1989), and Bharati (established in 2012). These stations facilitate Indian Scientific Expeditions, which have been ongoing annually since 1981.

Commitment to Environmental Protection

India's enactment of the Antarctic Act in 2022 reaffirms its dedication to environmental protection, scientific cooperation, and peaceful operations in Antarctica.

Dr. M Ravichandran's Perspective

Dr. M Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, emphasized the importance of hosting the ATCM and CEP meetings in 2024. He stated, "We look forward as a country to fostering meaningful exchanges of knowledge and expertise to advance the shared goals of environmental conservation and scientific research in the Antarctic region."
