Travis Unveils New Single 'Gaslight' and Discusses Upcoming Album 'L.A. Times'

By Damian Jones | March 21, 2024

Travis, the Glasgow quartet, has returned with their jaunty new single titled 'Gaslight.' The band's upcoming album, 'L.A. Times,' is set for release on July 12 via BMG. Frontman Fran Healy, who has called the City of Angels home for the past decade, sat down with NME to discuss the record, their tour with The Killers, memories of playing alongside Oasis, and the 25th anniversary of their iconic album 'The Man Who.'

'Gaslight': A Reflection on Mind Manipulation

The album's first single, 'Gaslight,' delves into the social disparities prevalent in Los Angeles. Healy reflects on the insidious form of mind manipulation that affects individuals across various contexts – from schools to politics. He emphasizes the importance of emancipation from such toxic influences.

Healy shares a powerful message: "If there’s someone in your life who leaves you feeling drained or diminished, it's time to cut ties. This song is about reclaiming your power and telling those negative forces to 'get to fuck.'"

'L.A. Times': A Spoken Word Piece

The title track, 'L.A. Times,' takes listeners to Skid Row, a poverty-stricken area where Healy's studio is located. Amidst the struggle and hardship, Healy witnessed stark contrasts – from people with nothing to a canary yellow Lamborghini cruising through the streets. The song captures the essence of this intense urban landscape.

Travis' return promises an exploration of Los Angeles beyond its glitz and glamour, shedding light on its complexities and contradictions.
